If you don't have a double deadbolt on your door that has glass, the intruder can simply break the glass and put their hand into the opening and unlock you deadbolt by turning the thumb-turn. A key must be hidden near the door and out of sight of the windows and all family members must be aware of the hidden key in case of a fire.
A key captive deadbolt has two (2) options. When the house is occupied, the thumb-turn option can be used on the inside cylinder. When the house is unoccupied or when you leave or go on vacation, remove the thumb-turn key from the double key cylinder on the inside.
