Tips for Choosing the Best Padlock for Your Needs

Tips for Choosing the Best Padlock for Your Needs

Securing personal belongings is a top priority for many of our clients, and padlocks are a great way to achieve that goal. At Area Safe & Lock Service, we are here to help you protect the things that matter the most, whether through the installation of a full-home lock overhaul, or guiding you through the best available padlocks.

Selecting the Right Size

There are many different padlocks currently on the market, and many consumers feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of available choices. A good place to start is by considering the size that is needed, as well as the purpose and style desired. As a general rule of thumb, bigger is better when it comes to padlocks. That said, there is no need to purchase a large and heavy lock to secure a school or gym locker. Also, assess the area surrounding the lock placement. It makes little sense to put a top-of-the-line, heavy padlock on a flimsy shed door that will fly off the hinges with a swift kick.

Protecting Valuable Items

When the item being secured has a high replacement value, it makes sense to select a lock that will prevent theft. A heavy, well-designed lock will cost more initially, but it can act as a type of theft "insurance" for many years to come. Also, investing in a truly well-built padlock will give you options down the line and can be used to secure any number of different items.

Consider Insurance Needs

Many insurance policies dictate the type of lock that must be used to secure insured items. Standard ratings include Sold Secure and CEN, and there are different levels of each. To get the full insurance benefit, be sure to select a padlock that meets the given specifications. It may also be necessary to document the purchase of the padlock, so keep that information on file.

Common Padlock Security Features

Many padlocks include an anti-drill plate. Some have a spin plate design so that a power drill cannot gain traction and enter the lock. Others integrate hardened steel inserts so that the drill cannot penetrate the metal. Another security feature is a lock with a thick shackle. It takes time and effort to cut through a lock shackle and locks that present too much of a challenge will discourage most thieves. A shackle that must be released on both sides requires twice as many cuts, which takes twice the time.
